Psalm 120
This Psalm is a personal lament and the first of the 15 Songs of Ascents which were sung during annual feasts and also recited by Pilgrims as they marched to the temple in Jerusalem. This particular one represents a heartfelt cry seeking deliverance from deceitful tongues. It is a reminder of our human day to day experiences of distress, deceit, and the longing for peace, as we navigate through life’s adversities.
The Psalmist desires to know the punishment for the deceitful, stating metaphorically, that sharp arrows of a warrior, with burning coals of the broom tree, should be their fate.
The specific mentioning of being in exile in Meshech and living among the tents of Kedar signifies the Psalmist’s sorrow of being surrounded by strife and conflict as well as his concluding desire for peace amidst a world of conflict.
In summary this Psalm is a testament to the present day’s Christian’s personal struggles and the spiritual journey towards peace and divine intervention.
Verse 1, “In my distress I cried to the LORD, and He heard me.”
I pray that in this month number 5 of grace the Lord shall hear each of your cries of distress and answer you with fullness of serenity.
